The History of Sheepskin Boots

It is not known when sheepskin boots,or shearling boots were first used by human.But we can imagine that far back when our ancestors were still hunting tribes they might use some animal skins to protect their feet in cold weather.

The animal skins used include cow skin,sheepskin,wolf skin,deer skin,and all kinds of others.

Time has come to 20th century.World War I,Australia.Pilots of aero fighers began to wear a kind of boots made of full sheepskin.This was a kind of footwear made of twin-faced sheepskin with fleece on the inside and with a tanned outer surface.They called it "fug boots",which stands for "flying uggly boots".

This is said to be the modern inception of sheepskin footwear.New Zealand also claims that it is their aviators who first used the fug boots.

There is no record that if this fug boots were massively manufatured or individually hand made.Later on,by the year of 1933,a company named Blue Mountains Ugg Boots began the massive manufacturing of the now famous boots:UGG boots.

However,disputes on the rights to manufacture the UGG boots rose with its name.Many companies and factories claimed their legal right to manufacture the boots.

(1) "No Visible Seed" - Visually free of seed contamination. This does not however mean the skin is completely free of seed, only visually free.

(2) "Light Seed" - Slight seed contamination visible in the wool but minimal mainly concentrated in the belly regions.

(3) "Medium Seed" - Light seed contamination is present over most of the wool surface but is concentrated around the belly area and the legs.

(4) "Heavy Seed" - Heavy contamination extending through the majority of the wool but especially prevalent around the belly area and the legs.

(5) "Burry" - Wool contaminated with hard seed. Can vary from light to heavy concentration. This level of seed can cause problems if it is not removed before fleshing starts as the rollers can sometimes punch them through the skin.

New UGG boots

1.Spray the sheepskin surface with wWater & stain repellant evenly,until it appears wet but not soaked.
2.Dry the boots in open air for at least 24 hours.Do NOT use direct heat or sunlight.
3.Lightly brush in one direction with a very soft bristle suede-nubuck brush to raise the sheepskin nap and natural tracking.

UGG boots after use

Whenever caring and cleaning your boots,follow strictly below guidelines:

1.Hand-wash only.DO NOT use a washing machine.
2.Moisten entire surface of sheepskin footwear with clean, cold water.
3.Dilute UGG Cleaner & Conditioner with 1/2 water and 1/2 Cleaner & Conditioner.
4.Apply a small amount of diluted Cleaner & Conditioner to a clean, wet sponge. DO NOT apply UGG Cleaner & Conditioner directly onto the footwear.
5.Gently scrub to clean entire area. Sheepskin has a delicate surface, which can be damaged if scrubbed aggressively, or with undiluted concentration.
6.Rinse in clean, cold water, do not soak boot.
7.Lightly stuff with paper to hold shape, and allow to dry naturally and slowly. DO NOT dry in direct heat or sunlight.
8.Once your boots is dry,lightly brush with a very soft suede/nubuck brush in one direction only.

Sheepskin Boots Made in Australia

Currently there are two major origins of production.Deckers UGG Australia brand is producing their boots in China and Australia.All others ugg boots are produced in Australia.Some factories even claim that their boots are hand made.So generally speaking,sheepskin boots made in Australia are not necessarily UGG Australia brand.They can be other brands or even no brand.

Regardless the locations of manufacture,the majority of sheepskin used for the UGG boots are coming from Australia.

The Merino Sheep produces the world's top grade sheepskin.

The Merino is an economically influential breed of sheep prized for its wool. Merinos are regarded as having some of the finest and softest wool of any sheep. Poll Merinos have no horns (or very small stubs, known as scurs), and horned Merino rams have long, spiral horns which grow close to the head.

The next best sheepskin comes from China.
