Mom used to iron everything. Work pants, sheets, underclothing, you name it - she pressed it. Which means, as a teenager, I ironed everything too. Thursday night meant looming over the creaky old ironing board, with the radio blaring, ironing my father's tee shirts and my brother's blue jeans.
Now I wear hospital scrubs and say to heck with that!
I love cotton. And I adore cotton hospital scrubs. Luckily, today's cotton garments need far less fuss than same garments in my Mom's day. Now, cotton does not mean just cotton. It means perma-pressed cotton, or wrinkle resistant cotton or wrinkle free cotton mixtures. It also means nurse's scrubs with no noticeable wrinkles. It means release from nights and mornings looming over the ironing board! Finally!
Most cotton material, and for me, that spells cotton scrubs fabrics, are created with a special resin treatment to assist in helping the scrubs garments reject wrinkling. This is a huge boost for doctors who wear uniforms to work every day. Most nursing scrubs are now wash and wear. Take those nurse's scrub uniforms right from the clothes dryer and fold them nicely, or hang them on a clothes hanger, and you're good to go! Easy, soft and good looking hospital scrubs are the standard now.
We know that some nurses still iron all their hospital scrub uniforms. We know some doctors never iron their hospital scrubs uniforms! It's simply an issue of taste, and sometimes, only a matter of getting to the clothes dryer in time to be sure your uniforms remain wrinkle-free, as nature (and the new resin treated cotton uniform fabrics) intended.
Sometimes, I think about the good old days when my Mom had toasty hot chocolate chip cookies waiting for me when I got home at the end of the day. But I sure do not miss those hours at the ironing board. Yes, I do indeed own an ironing board and a state of the art steam iron, but they don't get much use these days, due to my wrinkle free cotton medical scrubs. Thanks to advances in the construction of cotton garments, my mother's steam iron doesn't get much use anymore either. But she puts those hours she used to waste in ironing wrinkled cotton garments to good use. She still bakes delicious cookies.
