Nurses Scrubs: Yesterday And Today
There was a time when nurses donned crisp white uniforms along with perky starched caps. However, the changing times have rendered these uniforms a rarity. Today, the nursing staff requires practical and comfortable apparels that befit their long working hours. The new nurses scrubs offer this and more.
History of Nurses Scrubs
Surgical and nurses scrubs were introduced in the twentieth century. Prior to that, surgeons and medical professionals performed surgeries and other formalities in the operation room in their regular clothes. Surgeons sometimes draped butchers' apron to protect their clothes from blood stains.
By the 1940-50s, doctors started using white lab gowns to promote hygiene and cleanliness. However, the white uniform amidst the bright lights in the operating room proved detrimental to their eyesight. Also, maintenance of these white uniforms proved quite a tedious affair in a profession which had to constantly deal with wounds.
Green became the chosen color afterwards. This was more convenient, since it provided high contrast and reduced the glaring effect of blood and fluid spills.
Modern Nurses Scrubs
Modern nurses scrubs are made with emphasis on comfort and convenience. They are available in a variety of colors and designs which allow nurses to create their own unique style and express themselves freely. The most common scrub type is a top, pant and a jacket, made of pure cotton or a blend of cotton and polyester.
The scrub designs may also vary. Some hospitals allow smart V-neck or embroidered tops, with nursing shoes that match the prints of the attire. The pants are worn according to the wearer's convenience. It can be elastic or formal wear. Scrubs come with matching accessories such as small bags or pouches and caps.
Some hospitals assign different colors for different departments. For instance, nurses working in children's ward may wear multi-colored scrubs to look approachable to their patients. Those working in the labor department might wear light pink, yellow and blue-colored scrubs, whereas those working in the emergency room may don deep blue or green colored scrubs.
The idea behind the change in dress code from white gowns to colored tops and pants is to present a smart look, while ensuring convenience and breaking the monotony of the all-white uniform.
