There's a lot more to elderly caregiving than just wearing medical scrubs. Healthcare professionals who work with the elderly need to understand the physiological and psychological changes which occur as people age. They must be sensitive to the changing adaptations and needs in care which elderly patients may require. Loss of sensory acuity can significantly affect the elderly person's quality of life, as well as impact upon the elderly person's ability to communicate and interact effectively with other people and their environment. The following simulation of aging can provide younger caregivers with an opportunity to experience the process of aging and to understand the impact which these changes can have on daily life and routines.
For some elderly people these changes impose limitations upon their ability to perform such basic activities of everyday life as cooking, shopping, driving, bathing, dressing, walking, and even eating. Each trainee in hospital scrubs is given two cotton balls to place in their ears; a pair of gloves to put on their hands; a pair of rubber bands wrapped around two adjacent fingers of each hand to limit mobility; a pair of sunglasses smeared with petroleum jelly to simulate weakened vision; and several dry beans placed in each shoe. The workshop trainer turns on a radio to provide a background noise of static, and turns off the lights in the room. Trainees are then given an activity card which assigns a task which they must fulfil.
Examples of such tasks are you are an 85 year old person with severe hearing loss and arthritis. You need to find someone to join you in a card game. Or you are an 80 year old person with Alzheimer's and are disoriented and walk around asking everybody if they know where your mother is. Their denials frustrate you and make you physically aggressive. Or you are a 70 year old whose husband of 50 years recently died, and you are severely depressed, with no motivation to do anything except stare into space. Or you are a 65 year old woman with Parkinson's disease, with a resting tremor in both hands and a shuffle when you walk. Cut coupons from a newspaper and take them to the trainer. Or you are an 85 year old person with arthritis and osteoporosis. Count out all of the pills in your pill bottle and list how many pills there are of each type. Or you are 78 years old with severely impaired vision. Read a newspaper and do a crossword puzzle. Or you are a 70 year old who is missing a button on her floral print scrub top. Sew it on. Or you are an 85 year old blind man. Close your eyes and try to find someone to help you walk outside. Or you are 82 years old and suffer from advanced dementia. You cannot feed yourself, and you become aggressive when you feel frustrated. Find someone to feed you.
After half an hour of simulation, the trainees in medical scrubs should sit down and discuss their experiences with the group: what limitations and frustration did you experience? How did physical impairment affect your mobility and ability to dress in your hospital scrubs? How did visual and hearing impairment affect your ability to complete your task? How did other people treat you? How did it feel to be dependent on others? There is a lot more involved in being an effective caregiver to the elderly than merely wearing a floral print scrub top.
