Nursing Scrubs – How Did It Get Here?
How did nursing scrubs come to be, by evolution or by creation? The shorter years of existence of nursing uniforms saves us from suffering the same insurmountable problem as the theory of evolution and creation claim. The answer to this question is simple – there was a designer. Nursing scrubs were created. Paradoxically though, the nursing scrubs that we have today came through the evolution of ideas regarding the design as the history of humanity comes forward.
Back in the 1800s, traditional nursing uniforms were not at all very different from the religious habits as nurses. Based from the fashion during that period, nursing uniforms were consisted of a floor-length skirt, starched collar, cap, and apron worn with a bone corset. It was basically bulky, restrictive clothing, since most of the nurses who wore it were women. As the years advance, the industry was opened to men.
When men joined the nursing world, there was a need to revamp the nursing uniforms which did not take effect in an instant. For a time still, female nurses used a little shorter version of the habit-like uniforms, while male nurses wear long white sleeves neatly buttoned till the neck. Those tops were paired with the classic black pants. The uniforms remained uncomfortable and restrictive until the mid 1900s. It was then when female nurses' all white dress sleeves were cut short and men wore all white tunic and pants. White caps were kept during this time. Not long after that, women were also allowed to wear darker colored dress with a white pinafore-style apron.
Today, the nursing uniforms that are being created are wearable by both men and women – particularly the tunics. Gone are the skirts and caps, although in rare and special cases are still required. As innovations come, more styles were made available. We now have the more fashionable creations like the mock wrap and empire waist styles. More colors were also allowed, including even pink, yellow, orange and red. In fact, nurses enjoy wearing print scrubs, depending on the hospital's existing rules and regulations. More so, they can create their own design or customize their nursing scrubs.
