School Uniforms Through The Ages

Love them or loathe them school uniforms firmly have their place in modern society, acting as status symbols, good value everyday children's wear and vital differentiators on school trips around the world. The wide range of approaches to school uniform is remarkable and stems back through history, where uniforms were often made by top designers and cost a small fortune.

For most schools, city schools in particular, school uniforms are compulsory as it gives each child a common denominator and deters the unfortunate bullying and social issues that can come from some children not quite wearing the ‘coolest' threads. However, the humble uniform has other uses too, mainly as a cheap and good quality outfit that can be worn throughout the year and still looks good, but also for security reasons too. On a school trip, for example, if every child is in uniform, there is far less chance of anyone going missing and a far greater chance of spotting meandering children in the crowd.

School uniforms were first introduce in Britain in the 16th century as clothes of the poorest children or orphans who attended church and charity education centres. England's famous hospital schools of this time were full of young boys wearing cheaply made, historic costumes. It was not until almost 300 years later that institutional English public schools started to make uniforms compulsory, and then afterwards state schools followed suit. In the most expensive public schools, a uniform can be very strict, right down to the socks, length of shorts and even haircut, though most state schools employ a simple tie or jumper, with trousers for boys and a skirt for girls. However, many public schools even insist that their teachers wear uniforms too, though thankfully this is not common.

One interesting factor which saw the uniform take off amongst England's public schools was the threat of home schooling from wealthy families. Around the 18th and 19th centuries, public schools were actually relatively dangerous and filthy places, where the children of the wealthy did whatever they liked, usually physical games like rugby and cricket. Sick of seeing their sons destroy all of their good quality clothes and live in filth, parents soon started to home school their children instead and the schools reacted by introducing uniformity and order through uniforms. Hence the name. A modern parallel has been seen in some of America's toughest inner-city schools and colleges, where gang crime is so high that uniforms have been introduced to avoid confrontation.

There can be no denying how practical uniforms are though, not only for parents too. Instead of having to buy new school outfits each term or year, parents can simply buy one or two cheap school uniforms and, likewise, their children don't have to decide what to wear each morning. As a signifier of modern society, school wear is often overlooked, but history has shown that this simple outfit has far more than just an aesthetic application to it.
