Before I get to the 'homemade exfoliating lip scrub', I need to talk a little bit about ingredients. Most of us have come to learn that we need to read the labels when it comes to buying any skin care or other personal care product...including the so-called "natural" offerings. You may already be very aware that when it comes to personal care products, the labeling of "Natural" or "All-Natural" can be far from the truth. The following are only 3 examples of the many ingredients we need to know about and to avoid:
1. Synthetic Fragrances
Avoid products that list "fragrance" as an ingredient unless the label states that it's derived from essentials oils, or look for a phthalate-free label on the packaging. Phthalates are endocrine disrupters mimic hormones and may alter genital development.
2. Parabens
Parabens are antimicrobial chemicals that also have hormone-disrupting effects.
3. Ureas (made from urine)
Ureas are preservatives that have the potential to release formaldehyde in very small amounts and are a primary cause of contact dermatitis which can be mistaken for acne.
Pretty annoying! However, we don't need to read any labels when we go 'homemade' including skin care products that we can make ourselves using safe and natural ingredients. This is completely doable for a host of natural beauty products and, as an example, I'd like to offer the following exfoliating lip scrub.
This homemade exfoliating lip scrub recipe is really simple to put together and it goes like this:
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of Cold-pressed virgin olive oil.
- In a small glass bowl, mix in the olive oil with the sugar.
- Take a soft bristle toothbrush, and take up some of the olive oil/sugar mixture on it.
- Gently brush your lips in a circular motion just like you would brush your teeth.
Voila! Your very own homemade exfoliating lip scrub!
You can either put together a little batch every time you want to use this exfoliating lip scrub recipe or make a big batch and store it in an appropriate glass container in your bathroom readily available to exfoliate your lips once or twice per week.
