DVDs are a great technology with the ability to capture and store enormous amounts of information. The downside of DVDs, however, is that their reading surface is open and prone to damage. Since a clean and scratch-free surface is necessary for the laser beam to read the DVD, maintaining that surface blemish-free is necessary.

What to do if there is a blemish? Look for a CD or DVD scratch repair or removal kit. The first task of scratch repair is, of course, scratch prevention. Keep your DVDs stored in their cases rather than piled on top of a television. Don't whirl the DVD on any surface, and try not to handle the active side of the disk.

Instead, hold the DVD by its edge and using the center opening. If you do get dirt on the Disk, scrub it off with a soft tissue or cloth. That bit of dirt can go into the plastic if not cleaned. A DVD scratch remover and removal products patch up the small lines and even divots in the plastic by means of either a slight abrasive or a good filler. It's similar to filling in scratches on cars, which have a protective clear coating.

If the scratch has penetrated to the bottom layer, a scratch remover cannot help. Refer to the manual of the repair kit carefully, keeping sure not to damage the disk while you're cleaning it! When you're completed, dry off the disk completely with a soft tissue, and put it back in its cover.
