Fraser Island | My Fraser Island Experience
I wanted to meet some new people and explore the Island at my own pace so I opted for a self drive 3 day, 2 night package with Mad Fraser Island Tours. They are a new company and so I took advantage of the special offers at the time! They really knew their stuff and had a real knack of getting your adrenaline pumping before we set off.
Like all companies they gave us a safety talk first about how to control the vehicles and what to look out for or avoid. We were then put into groups and given our very own 4WD vehicle. I was secretly chuffed that the group I had were all easy-going, no 'don't minds', everyone was happy to say what they wanted which was a god-send when we hit the supermarket to stock up for the next 3 days. As one guy put it, you can never have too much food, and food is how you bond and make friends. Fully loaded, we hit the ferry and found ourselves on the world's largest sand Island, the infamous Fraser Island.
The initial drive on the sand isn't exactly smooth but good work to the guy in our group who volunteered to drive first. There is a lot to see on Fraser Island and even though 3 days sounds like a long time, it is often not enough! Having got a little used to the sand we used our suggested itinerary to head to Eli Creek where we had a paddle in the clear water. You can get in and float down the creek but the eels really put me off! After a walk along the boardwalk back to the beach we headed inland for Lake Wabby.
Lake Wabby is as spectacular as they say especially when you have to trek over the Hammerstone Sandblow (posh name for 'massive sand dune'). When you reach the top of the sand dune, it's a steep drop to the emerald green lake but the beer at the lake was worth it all. It's a bit strange at first swimming with random fish but we all soon got used to it. Aware that we had to make time to set up camp before tides went in and darkness arrived (they tell you all about this before you set off) we set off to camp, got our cook on, had a few drinks and good laugh.
It is pretty cold at night time and we all woke up early keen to get a full day in. An awesome cooked brekkie later we set off for Indian Head along 75 mile beach, on the East Coast of Fraser Island. We passed the Maheno Shipwreck and the Cathedrals (coloured sand cliffs) and made the obligatory trek up to Indian Head. The view is well worth it!
About 50 pictures later and a few groans that we couldn't see tiger sharks in the ocean (pointless me looking, my eyes are poor!) we trekked down to the famous Champagne Pools. I was a bit scared at first, the sea really crashes against the rocks, but it's lovely to chill out in the pools and admire the surroundings. Although you could easily spend the whole day here alone, we all fancied trying to get to Lake Allom to try and find some turtles. It's also a lot of fun driving inland. It was worth the effort as the swimming with turtles was by far my best part of the trip and one I will never forget.
After another cold and sleepless night (for me - we saw dingos near our campsite!) we woke to another top breakfast and a trip to Lake MacKenzie. The water really is that crystal clear. It was cool that we had got there early as we got to experience the lake before the masses arrived. We decided just to chill and take in the surroundings with a leisurely lunch before sadly making our way, along with everyone else, back to the ferry and the real world.
All in all, an awesome trip, the whole atmosphere of Fraser Island makes you feel like you are in the middle of an ocean on your very own Island and I would give both my arms to go back and do it all again!
